The church band is a group of 15 adults and teenagers playing various woodwind, string and brass instruments. The music is selected for and arranged for players of all levels from grade three to very experienced players.
The band plays a large range of music including religious, classical, modern, music from films and musicals and some pop and rock. The principle task for the band is to supply music for a church service once a month. This includes playing the hymns and suitable pieces during the service. Also the band gives concerts in the church, plays at church events, at other churches, and in Letchworth town centre. In 2012 the band, with players from other churches, performed in the Leisure centre in Stevenage.
The band was originally formed as the result of a suggestion from Brian Anderson, a previous minister of ours, after the visit to our church by the St. Albans band. Brian asked “Why can’t we have a band?” The moment was seized and a group of musicians in the church came together. The first meeting was in April 2003 and the first performance was in May 2003 during the morning service.
Over the years, the band has grown and changed but always a mixture of instruments and talents. In all, over 30 musicians have played at various points in the band. The band has played in more than 100 services, performed more than 40 times in concerts and at events, and have played more than 80 different pieces plus over 200 hymns and church songs.
